And the number one Christmas movie is, drum roll please, Scrooge starring Alistair Sim. There is just no question in my mind which should be number one on the list. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is one of the greatest Christmas related stories ever told which is evidenced by the hundreds of movie adaptations. What makes this one the best one, though? Well, it all has to go back to Alistair Sim as the title character, Ebenezer Scrooge. He just lives the character. One can tell that he had a lot of fun in the role; plus, many later adaptations have borrowed multiple scenes from this 1951 classic.
What separates Alistair Sim from other actors who have portrayed Scrooge is the pure malice Scrooge exhibits before his change compared with his pure craziness once Scrooge changes his ways. I don’t think any other actor (and there have been great performances) has matched Sim in Ebenezer Scrooge’s opposing personalities.
