The 15 Greatest Christian Rock Bands: #7

7. NewsBoys

One of the highlights of my younger self and music was watching Newsboys on television playing a show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I couldn’t help but realize that as a genre, Christian rock had turned a corner. No longer relegated to Christian clubs and churches, here was a Christian band playing in the same building where Elvis and the Beatles were enshrined. Whether consciously of not, the Newsboys were making a statement that, yes, they do belong in the same building as the greats and I whole heartedly believe that they do.

The first thing to know about the Newsboys is that they are a very prolific band and have put out many albums with many memorable songs. Name Breakfast, Shine, Love Liberty Disco, or any other song from their discography and it is probably a huge Christian radio hit. They continued to score hit after hit even through many different lineup changes and three different front men: John James, Peter Furler, and Michael Tait of dc Talk.

Forming in 1985, the NewsBoys sound has always been a mix of rock, pop, and electronic music. Even more important than their hybridization of music is the fact that the bands writes very catchy songs and even years after not listening much to NewsBoys, I can still remember many of their songs off the top of my head.

Favorite song: Truth Be Known (Everybody Gets a Shot)
